Body Mass Index-for-Age Percentiles
What Are BMI-for-Age Percentiles?
Body Mass Index (BMI)-for-age percentiles are used to assess whether a boy's weight or a girl's weight is appropriate for her height and age.
Because children and adolescents are continuously growing, BMI is interpreted differently from adults.
Instead of using fixed BMI ranges, a child's BMI is compared with that of other childs of the same sex and age using standardized growth charts.
The result is expressed as a percentile, indicating the percentage of childs of the same age and sex who have a lower BMI.
For example:
A BMI at the 50th percentile means that 50% of childs the same age and sex have a lower BMI and 50% have a higher BMI.
A BMI at the 90th percentile means the BMI is higher than 90% of childs of the same sex and age.
BMI-for-Age Percentile Categories for Girls
The standard classification is:
BMI-for-Age Percentile |
Weight Category |
|---|---|
Less than 5th percentile |
Underweight |
5th to less than 85th percentile |
Healthy weight |
85th to less than 95th percentile |
Overweight |
95th percentile or greater |
Obesity |
What Does Each Category Mean?
Underweight (less than 5th Percentile)
Childs below the 5th percentile may have insufficient body fat or inadequate nutrition.
Some children are naturally small, while others may have nutritional deficiencies or underlying medical conditions.
A healthcare professional may recommend further evaluation if growth is poor or if there are concerns about diet or health.
Healthy Weight (5th to less than 85th Percentile)
Girls within this range generally have a healthy weight for their age and height.
Maintaining balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, and healthy lifestyle habits supports normal growth and development.
Overweight (85th to less than 95th Percentile)
Childs in this range have an increased likelihood of developing obesity if preventive measures are not taken.
Healthy eating habits, increased physical activity, and reduced sedentary behavior can help maintain a healthy weight.
Obesity (≥95th Percentile)
Girls or boys at or above the 95th percentile are classified as having obesity.
They have a higher risk of health problems such as:
High blood pressure, High cholesterol, Type 2 diabetes, Fatty liver disease, Sleep apnea, Joint problems, Emotional and psychological difficulties
Early assessment and appropriate intervention can significantly improve long-term health outcomes.
Why Are Percentiles Used Instead of Adult BMI?
Children experience rapid changes in height, weight, and body composition throughout childhood and adolescence.
A BMI that is normal at one age may not be normal at another.
Using age- and sex-specific percentiles provides a more accurate assessment of growth than adult BMI cut-off values.
Carta BMI berkaitan
Fig-1 adalah carta BMI for age percentiles bagi kanak-kanak perempuan berumur 2 - 20tahun.
Paksi-x adalah penanda umur sementara paksi-y adalah dapatan kiraan BMI.
Cara Guna:
